Oris was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein. The name is derived from the nearby river Oris. In 1911 Oris is Hölstein's largest employer with 300 jobs and expands to Como. First known for its pocket watches, Oris began producing wristwatches in 1925. After the death of Georges Christian, his son-in-law Oscar Herzog took over the management of the company and accompanied it through many ups and downs until 1971. Among other things, the Swiss Watch Statute, which is intended to regulate the Swiss watch industry and only permits the introduction of foreign technologies through an official permit. Oris designs an alarm clock with an 8-day power reserve to counter the drop in sales during the Second World War.At the end of the 1960s, over 40% of the world's watches were made in Switzerland, 1.2 million of which were Oris watches. Until the 1970s and 1980s, quartz watches from Asia were becoming increasingly popular. This quartz crisis meant the end of 900 watch companies.
In 1970 Oris became part of ASUAG, which was later renamed the famous SWATCH Group, and began manufacturing its own quartz watches. Unfortunately, Oris was not able to build on its earlier successes and stopped manufacturing its own movements in 1981.
But thanks to the decision of the managing directors Rolf Portmann and Ulrich Herzog to manufacture only mechanical watches in the medium price segment, Oris was able to make a new start.
