Since 1845: German Watchmaking Art from Saxony

The history of the manufacture dates back to 1845. Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his watch company in the Müglitz valley. At that time, silver deposits were exhausted and unemployment was high. With a loan from the state government, Lange began training straw weavers and miners in Glashütte to become watchmakers to improve living conditions. This marked the beginning of a flourishing watch industry.

In World War II, watch production was expanded to include time fuses. After the war, the Soviet occupying forces dismantled all manufacturing facilities. From 1945, the companies of the watch industry were expropriated and nationalized.

In 1951, almost all previously independent watch companies were merged into one large enterprise: VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). The best-known predecessors were UROFA, UFAG, and A. Lange & Söhne. The GUB was tasked with supplying the GDR and later the states of the Comecon with all kinds of watches. The production of wristwatches, which were exported to West Germany in large quantities, became most famous.

Since 2000, Glashütte Uhrenbetrieb GmbH has been part of the Swatch Group. One of the company’s best-known brands is Glashütte Original.
