From the first daring take-offs to the birth of commercial aviation, Breitling's history is inextricably linked to that of flight. In the 1930s, the Breitling Huit Aviation Department made a name for itself with the development of precision cockpit watches. Two decades later, it introduced another innovative flying instrument - but this time in portable form: the Ref. 765 AVI. This pioneering pilot's watch created the technical background for today's Classic AVI, a collection inspired by the robustness of the famous early aeroplanes. The Classic AVI Tribute to Vought F4U Corsair honours one of these legends. As a naval aircraft in the Second World War, the Corsair had to master difficult take-offs and landings on aircraft carriers and remote airstrips. Speed and lift were of paramount importance, and the aircraft mastered this challenge with flying colours: it was the first single-engine fighter aircraft to break the speed barrier of 640 km/h and also had an outstanding rate of climb. Its "articulated wing" design, oversized propeller and characteristic blue paintwork made it a landmark in aviation history.
