Development of NOMOS Glashütte

NOMOS Glashütte, founded in 1990, is considered a young, but very efficient manufacturer in the industry of traditional watch manufacturers, most of whom have a company history of well over 100 years. Barely two months after the fall of the wall, photographer and computer specialist Roland Schwertner registered the NOMOS brand in the small watchmaking community in Saxony. This is not the first time the NOMOS brand has been present in Glashütte. The watch company NOMOS already existed in 1906, but it did not produce any watches it had made itself, only sold Swiss watches. A prerequisite for the addition of the word "Glashütte" is that at least 50 percent of a watch must be built in Glashütte. Today, NOMOS achieves a degree of in-house production of up to 95%. The word NOMOS includes various definitions. Probably the closest to the world of watches is the ancient Greek, in which NOMOS means custom, law, and later coin. With the founding of the first watch manufactory in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, Glashütte began its rise to become a world-famous watchmaking city.

Today's NOMOS Glashütte/SA presented its first Orion, Ludwig, Tetra, and Tangente collections only two years after they were created. To date, the exquisite circle of beautiful precision mechanical watches has been expanded by four additional collections. They have been joined by the Tangomat, the Zürich, the Club, and most recently, in 2013, the Ahoy. These self-developed movements or calibres are labelled according to the Greek alphabet and equipped with various complications:

α (Alpha), β (Beta), γ (Gamma), δ (Delta), ε (Epsilon), ζ (Zeta), ξ (Xi), η (Eta) sundial. The sundial is of course not built into a clock, but represents a clock in its own right. A modern form of the probably first time taking of the world.

In the relatively short time of its existence, the watch manufactory NOMOS Glashütte has been able to establish an excellent reputation. The Tangente in particular has helped to make NOMOS known throughout the world. Even now, the NOMOS Tangente is considered the design classic that has been awarded annually in national and international competitions since 2000. A watch could not be more clearly and concretely designed. This, together with the quality of craftsmanship, is what makes this NOMOS flagship watch so special.

It is quite astonishing that a photographer and computer expert should found a watch company and achieve such fame within almost two decades. One of the reasons for this is the combination of the tradition of craftsmanship cultivated in Glashütte and the many possibilities offered by the most modern technical possibilities. Direct proximity to the customer is also an essential component that has an important function at NOMOS.
