The Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A. is a long-established Swiss watch manufacture with the oldest registered watch brand in the world. The factory originates from a production site built in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, in 1832, where the company headquarters are still located today. Until 1986, Longines also produced its own calibers.

History of Longines: Pioneer of Aviation & Timekeeping

1832: Ernest Francillon founds a watch trading business in Saint-Imier. His nephew takes over in 1854 and buys land outside Saint-Imier called “Les Longines” – the elongated meadows.
1903: First ladies’ pendant watch.
1905: First men’s wristwatch. The company then focuses on sports timekeeping.
1927: Historic recording of flight pioneer Charles Lindbergh’s Atlantic crossing. Lindbergh was instrumental in the production of a special Longines that simplified longitude determination during flight. Available under his name from 1932.
1980s: Like many major watch manufacturers, Longines entered a crisis due to mass production of quartz watches and was integrated into the former SMH Group, now Swatch Group.
