History of Longines

In 1832 Ernest Francillion founded a watch trade in Saint-Imier. Ernest's nephew took over the company in 1854 and bought a piece of land outside Saint-Imier called the Elongated Meadows. In French "Les Longines"
In 1903 the first ladies' pendant watch was created and only 2 years later the first men's wristwatch. After that the company concentrated mainly on sports timekeeping. One of the most historical records was the Atlantic crossing of the flight pioneer Lindbergh in 1927, he was also instrumental in the production of a special watch that simplified the determination of longitude during flight and was available under his name from 1932.
Like many other large watch manufacturers, Longines, too, went into a crisis in the 1980s with the mass production of quartz watches, which led to their integration into the then SMH Group and today's Swatch Group.
