to the history:
The entire current IWC Pilot range is inspired by this very model: the Mark XI. The first Mark 11s arrived from Schaffhausen in 1948, representing a more restrained vision of a pilot's watch than those used in the two world wars, and still unsurpassed in their purity. In addition to civilians, this model was frequently used by the BOAC, the Royal Australian Air Force and, like the one offered here, the RAF; hence the broad British military arrow logo on the dial. The reason why this watch was so sought after is not only its well-balanced appearance, but above all its high quality and reliability, as it houses the legendary Calibre 89 with stop-seconds and 50 hours of power reserve. It is protected by a robust case with an anti-magnetic soft iron dome, which was very advanced in the 1950s.
To ensure that all watches supplied to the military met the high standards, they were tested for 44 days in 5 different locations and at temperatures ranging from -5 to 45 degrees! Not only is it a top-class timepiece, it also looks really good. The stainless steel case measures 35.3 mm and has a perfectly designed dial. The Mark 11 was an exercise in straightforward simplicity. The contrasting white Arabic numerals on the matt black dial are timeless and were a necessity at the time in order to make the only function this watch offers, namely reading the time, clearer.
