Navitimer - History

Probably Breitling's best-known model is the successor to the "Chronomat", the "Navitimer" model, which has been available since 1952. The Navitimer has a complex bezel with a slide rule scale that can be turned in both directions, allowing fuel consumption, climb or descent rates and average speeds to be calculated quickly. The Navitimer was launched in 1952 and is still a real legend among pilot watches. The catchy term "chronograph" is composed of the terms "navigation" and "timepiece" and thus describes the intended use of the wristwatch: similar to an on-board computer, the wristwatch enables the determination of mathematical calculations due to the slide rule bezel. In this way, the usefulness of the watch goes well beyond displaying the time and stopping time periods. Using the watch, pilots can calculate their speed, fuel consumption, climb and sink rates, and convert units.

Breitling's Navitimer has been available since 2009 with the proprietary Manufacture Caliber B01. The design of the dial and the arrangement of the subdials are clearly inspired by the original look of the watch. Today's top models feature a rattrapante chronograph function, also designed by Breitling. There is great interest among watch fans in limited special editions. The abbreviation AOPA stands for Airkraft Owners and Pilots Association. This association was created in 1939 and represents the world's largest organization of aircraft owners and pilots.

The new Navitimer

In spring 2018, Breitling presented a revised Navitimer collection, the Navitimer 8 without the typical slide rule function. Thanks to its new design, this series, which includes chronographs, world clocks and three-hand variants with date or day date display, appears more orderly and efficient. The number 8 in the series name refers to the company founded in 1938 by Huit Aviation, which produces on-board clocks with an eight-day power reserve.
