The corporate history of Union Glashütte

For over 125 years, the history of Union Glashütte has been inextricably linked with the Dresden watch wholesaler Johannes Dürrstein (1845-1901). Dürrstein had already been successfully active in the watch trade for 20 years and was the exclusive distribution partner of A. Lange & Söhne. He realized that high-quality universal watches at reasonable prices promised enormous sales success. From 1880 he began selling pocket watches in Switzerland under the name Union.

The foundation of Union Glashütte in 1893

This was followed in 1893 by the founding of the Union watch factory in Glashütte, Saxony, which had already become the centre of German watchmaking. Dürrstein handed over the technical operation to master watchmaker Julius Bergter (1856 - 1944), who was also responsible for the universal watch presented in 1900. It had 18 complications and for a long time was regarded as the more complicated watch par excellence.
In Germany, Austria, Bohemia and Switzerland, the brand quickly established itself and found a strong market. At the end of the 1920s, the global economic crisis led to considerable economic bottlenecks for the company, which eventually led to bankruptcy. The Union watch factory was finally deleted from the commercial register in 1936.
New foundation after 60 years
Exactly 60 years after this event, Union Glashütte was revived in the course of the Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH. In the spirit of Dürrstein, the brand's watches still offer a cost-effective alternative to the much more expensive luxury models from Glashütte Original. Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH and Union Uhrenfabrik GmbH - and thus Union Glashütte and Glashütte Original - have belonged to the Swatch Group since 2000.

Watches from Union Glashütte - not just a watch

Only exceptional top products are able to convince with the brand name as a synonym for an entire city. This applies to Union Glashütte watches. Glashütte in the district of Saxon Switzerland became famous throughout the world for the production of luxurious chronometers. Here, too, high-quality craftsmanship has a long tradition. The Union Glashütte manufactory has existed since 1845. The drying up of the silver finds in the city caused a rapid reduction in employment opportunities and opened up the possibility of a promising business for the founder of Union Glashütte. The origins of the Union Glashütter watches are to this day the craft. In the beginning it was mainly straw weavers and miners who, after the silver mines had dried up, learned and perfected the art of watchmaking. The founder of the world-famous quality label was not only interested in the expansion of his company, but also in the living conditions of the almost needy workers. After reunification, Union Glashütte watches continued to stand for high-quality products with a high standard of representation in the 21st century.

The moon phase display is one of the oldest complications in the art of watchmaking

Union Glashütte shows this in a timelessly elegant way: A rounded stainless steel case with an external diameter of 44 mm brings the moon phase of the Belisar chronograph to the centre in the best possible way. At 10 o'clock, an inconspicuous corrector is integrated next to the buttons of the chronograph movement, with which the day of the week can be set separately. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal on both sides, a water resistance of up to 10 bar (100 m) and the characteristic screw-on flanks of the Belisar collection round off the list of its features. They are complemented by a brown, crocodile embossed calf.

The magic of the moon - on the arm and in the cloudless night sky

During the moon phase of the Belisar Chronograph, a noble gold moon is moved in front of a dark blue firmament. It is in good company: the white dial with black nickel-plated indices and numerals clearly stands out from the various calendar functions: for example, the date, which is displayed by a central hand with moon-sickle-shaped tip, or the displays for the day of the week and the month. Like the moon phase itself, they are elegantly integrated into the chronograph counters, the 30-minute counter at 12 o'clock and the 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. The small second in turn divides the counter with a 24-hour display at 9 o'clock. A blued stop-second hand from the centre also takes over the short time measurement.
