Oris Kultur - History with a happy ending

Oris was founded over 110 years ago. At first it was a subsidiary of Lohner & Nägelin, but soon Oris established itself as an independent private label. Almost 30 years after it was founded, the company produced around 7,000 watches a day, which was a remarkable development, especially as it was mainly handmade watches. Customers throughout Europe, Asia, New Zealand and South America were fascinated by the watches. Even 30 years later, in the 1960s, the brand was one of the ten largest watch manufacturers in Switzerland, but the quartz crisis followed. Many renowned companies, including a number from the high-quality watch sector, have come under pressure, even to the point of filing for bankruptcy. The Oris company was resold to ASUAG, whereupon the production of cheap watches became necessary until Dr. Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog rebuilt the company in 1982.
