Founded in 1918 by the brothers Georges and Henri Schaeren, Mido - derived from the Spanish "Yo mido" ("I measure") - quickly became one of the most important watch manufacturers in Switzerland. The company initially found a market in the automobile segment and for car enthusiasts displayed the radiator grilles of popular car brands such as Fiat, Ford and Bugatti in watch cases and even presented these "watches of the motorists" at the Geneva Auto Salon.
Developed in 1934, the Multifort is one of the milestones in Mido's traditional history. It was the first watch ever to feature not only an automatic movement, but was also antimagnetic, water-resistant and shock-resistant. Initially specializing in water-resistant watches, the company later focused on automatic winding. With the Mido Ocean Star, the then revolutionary single-shell case was introduced. In the 1970s, the company played a major role in the development of digital watches.
Since 1985, the Mido brand has been part of the Swatch Group, the world leader in the watch industry. Today, the company is based in the industrial city of Le Locle, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, and Mido products are sold in 70 countries.
