Baume & Mercier was founded in 1830 as a family business

The brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume opened a watch shop in Les Bois, a village in Switzerland.
Their business immediately enjoyed great success and an excellent reputation. The store puts a lot of emphasis on the development of exceptional modelsand innovations. Their motto "Be satisfied only with perfection. Make only watches of the highest quality" brought the Frères Baume company rapid growth.
As a businessman ahead of his time, Louis-Victor sensed women's interest in watches and gave his daughter Mélina a gold pocket watch in 1869. It was only logical that a store opening abroad soon followed.

Together they founded the Baume & Mercier brand in Geneva in 1918.

In 1919, the company was honored with the greatest international award of the time - the "Poinçon de Genève" or "Geneva Seal", a seal of quality for particularly sophisticated craftsmanship and high quality.
Paul Mercier was also aware that a company could only survive if it kept up with the times. In the Roaring Twenties, the brand embraced the importance of emancipation and realized women's desires. In the 1940s, Baume & Mercier launched the Marquise. This jewelry watch, which had a bracelet style bracelet, extremely practical.
The brand developed a series of modern watches for women. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company - a concept still expressed today by Baume & Mercier's logo, the Greek letter (Phi) - laid the foundation for a watch that is now considered the archetype of the traditional round watch.
Various chronographs were introduced that had functions such as a moon phase or a triple date display, as well as a collection of round watches with a simple design and plain dials. Thanks to these legendary watches of the 1950s, today the brand is revisiting its origins and drawing inspiration from its past to develop collections such as the Capeland, Classima or even the new Clifton line.
In the 1970s, Baume & Mercier produced watches such as the Galaxie or the Stardust models. these models won international awards such as the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden. In 1973, Baume & Mercier was once again a step ahead, followed by the Riviera , the world's first stainless steel sports watch.
When the Richemont Group took over the brand in 1988, its collection expanded to include a number of models such as the Hampton and the Linea, which became the brand's flagship lines.

The companies were distinguished by a rarely high accuracy of the rate

They set precision records and won various timekeeping competitions, of which the tests conducted by the Kew Observatory near London are particularly noteworthy in terms of precise timekeeping. In 1892, Baume won this competition thanks to a pocket watch with chronometer with tourbillon movement, whose accuracy remained unchallenged for more than ten years.
Shortly before the beginning of the 1920s, the director of the company, William Baume and Paul Mercier merged their business.
